Trump rejects Zelensky’s request for more Patriot missiles – FT

The US president has also cast doubt on allowing Ukraine to manufacture the interceptors under license

US President Donald Trump has reportedly rejected Vladimir Zelensky’s request for hundreds of additional Patriot interceptor missiles, the Financial Times has claimed, citing people familiar with the talks. The refusal comes as Washington has also cast doubt on plans to allow Ukraine to manufacture the weapons under license.

According to the newspaper, Trump declined the request during an Oval Office meeting last week, citing shortages in US inventories and Washington’s own needs for the missiles amid the conflict with Iran. He has publicly rejected reports of munition shortfalls.

Kiev has intensified its demands for Western air-defense missiles as Russian forces have stepped up strikes on Ukrainian military-industrial and logistics facilities in response to escalating terrorist attacks on Russian territory.

Ukraine has repeatedly complained that it lacks enough Patriot interceptors. Zelensky recently instructed Ukrainian ambassadors to monitor missile stockpiles in their host countries and pressure governments to transfer weapons to Kiev.

Trump had suggested at a NATO summit in Türkiye last month that Washington could allow Ukraine to manufacture Patriot missiles domestically or elsewhere in Europe. However, he has since cast doubt on the idea.

“We’re looking at it,” Trump told the FT last week, describing the Patriot as an “extraordinary weapon” and saying Washington had to be “a little bit careful” about whom it licensed to manufacture sensitive US military technology.

Even if approval were granted, the plan would do little to address Kiev’s immediate demands. Experts have warned that it would likely take years before the first Ukrainian-produced interceptor emerged from a new production line.

The initiative has also reportedly faced resistance from US manufacturers. Boeing, which produces sensitive seeker components for PAC-3 interceptors, is said to be reluctant to transfer the technology abroad, while existing production chains are already strained.

Several European NATO members have also said they are reaching the limits of what they can provide Ukraine without weakening their own defenses.

Moscow maintains that Western arms deliveries only prolong the conflict without changing its outcome. Russian officials have also warned that supplying increasingly advanced weapons and military technology to Kiev makes NATO countries direct participants in the hostilities.
