President Donald Trump is convening Republicans in Texas ahead of the midterms as the party tries to keep control of Congress.
The midterm convention will be held Sept. 9-10 in Dallas, the president announced Tuesday on social media.
“It has never been done before, and will be a truly Historic Event,” Trump wrote in the Truth Social post.
He previewed that he expects Republicans to celebrate the “Great American comeback,” which he said includes tax cuts, improved border security and and “lower costs,” even though inflation has surged to its highest level in over three years.
“At the Event, we will have hardworking Americans, our Great Innovators, Entrepreneurs, Manufacturers, First Responders, and Job Creators who are powering our Nation’s Golden Age, and proving that America’s best days are still ahead of us,” he said.
The Republican National Committee approved a rule change during its winter meeting in January that would allow the party to hold a convention during a midterm election year, an unprecedented move since the events are typically held on during presidential cycles.
In March, the Democratic National Committee scrapped plans for a midterm convention.
Trump’s announcement comes as many Republicans worry that the party risks losing control of Congress amid the president’s low poll numbers, anger over the Iran war and widespread concerns about the cost of living.
Trump had earlier promised a midterm convention but had not specified the date or location, leaving campaigns, donors and operatives in the dark for months.
The location appears intended to rally Republicans in Texas, where Attorney General Ken Paxton faces a strong challenge from Democrat James Talarico in the U.S. Senate race.
