Bad faith: Pope mistaken for prank caller in bank mishap

The Vatican leader allegedly struggled to revise personal records after customer service staff doubted the unusual request

A bank employee hung up on Pope Leo XIV after the pontiff tried to change his address over the phone, according to an anecdote shared by a longtime friend of the Vatican leader and reported by the New York Times.

The Chicago-born Leo became the first American elected Pope when he was chosen to lead the Catholic Church in 2025.

Two months into the role, Leo, formerly known as Robert Francis Prevost, called his bank to update the phone number and address on his account after moving to the Vatican, Tom McCarthy said at a Catholic gathering in Illinois last week.

McCarthy, who has known the Pope for more than four decades, said Leo correctly answered the bank employee’s security questions but was told he would still need to visit a branch in person to make the changes.

“Well, I’m not going to be able to do that,” McCarthy recalled the Pope saying. “I gave you all the security questions.”

Leo then reportedly tried another approach.

“Would it matter to you if I told you I’m Pope Leo?” he asked, according to McCarthy.

The employee hung up, apparently believing the call was a prank.

The Pope’s brother, John Prevost, confirmed the account to CNN on Wednesday, saying Leo had answered “four or five” security questions before the teller ended the call.

“She said, ‘Oh really?’ and hung up,” Prevost told CNN, adding that the employee “just thought it was a prank.”

McCarthy said the issue was eventually resolved after another priest, the Reverend Bernie Scianna, contacted the bank president and threatened to move the Pope’s account elsewhere. The New York Times reported that one of the Pope’s provincials later visited the branch in person to finalize the changes.
