Dubai influencers warned over posts depicting war damage

Emirati officials have threatened violators with fines and jail time for publishing footage related to alleged Iranian strikes

The Dubai authorities have threatened influencers publishing materials that depict damage reportedly caused by Iranian missiles and drones with hefty fines or even jail.

Tehran has denied targeting civilian infrastructure in neighboring countries, including in the UAE, insisting that its armed forces are only attacking American military bases in the region in response to US and Israeli attacks.

Dubai has for some time been a magnet for content creators from around the world with its Dedicated Residence Golden Visa.

In a social media post, Emirati authorities warned people against publishing any materials deemed to be harmful to “public order” and “national unity.” Those violating the regulations will face fines of up to $77,000 or jail.

An anonymous lifestyle influencer residing in Dubai told The Telegraph that the local authorities “want to control the narrative, that’s for sure.”

“There are strict rules about what you can say here,” she added.

In a statement issued on Saturday – hours after the US and Israel launched massive airstrikes on Iran – the UAE public prosecutor’s office warned “against publishing or circulating rumors and information from unknown sources through social media platforms.”

The authorities advised online publishers to obtain “information solely from official and accredited sources,” adding that, “Spreading rumors is a crime.”

On Saturday, the UAE Ministry of Defense said that the country had come under Iranian attack involving numerous ballistic missiles, with some of the rockets intercepted by air defenses. It revealed that missile debris had fallen on a residential area and that one person was killed in an “incident” at Abu Dhabi’s airport.

The Gulf country is home to two US military bases, which have reportedly been hit by Iranian retaliatory strikes in recent days.

The ongoing US-Israeli attack on the Islamic Republic killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and a number of senior Iranian commanders over the weekend. More than 1,200 people have been killed in Iran since the campaign began, including at least 160 pre-teen students and teachers. Russia has condemned the attack on Iran.
