Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry (R) is calling on Louisiana State University (LSU) to build a statue in honor of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
“We’re going to put a challenge out to the LSU Board of Supervisors to find a place to put a statue of Charlie Kirk to defend the freedom of speech on college campuses,” Landry said in a video posted to social media.
Kirk, 31, was assassinated on Sept. 10 at the first stop of his “American Comeback Tour” at Utah Valley University while engaging in debate in front of thousands of students. The conservative firebrand and devout follower of Jesus Christ is survived by his wife Erika and his two young children.
“There is no better warrior for free speech than Charlie Kirk, and we must continue his legacy on every campus in America,” he wrote.
Landry called for a memorial to Kirk after Turning Point USA came to LSU’s campus on Monday night, WDSU News reported. The event was part of the “American Comeback Tour,” which has continued with the help of Kirk’s organization, fellow commentators, and political figures in the wake of his death.
Landry was a speaker at the event, along with conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey.
Tyler Robinson, 22, of Utah, was arrested and accused of violently assassinating Kirk. The investigation is ongoing.
