Embattled EU Commissioner Ursula von Der Leyen Survives Another Two No-Confidence Votes in the European Parliament

VDL is getting weaker by the day.

By now, embattled Ursula von der Leyen (VDL) has survived FOUR censure motions in the last few months.

But with every ‘victory,’ the European Commissioner becomes weaker and more indebted to the political movements that saved her neck.

Viktor Orbán’s rightwingers now pose a constant danger to VDL’s rule in the European Commission.

Before VDL, the last European Commissioner to face a motion of censure in the European Parliament was Jean-Claude Juncker, over a decade ago, in 2014.

Neither of today’s motions was expected to secure the two-thirds majority required to eject von der Leyen, but they are a timely reminder of just how fractured the European Parliament is, and how the populist factions are growing on the right and on the left.

Reuters reported:

“EU lawmakers rejected the two motions of censure with 378 members of the 720-strong parliament expressing support for von der Leyen in the first vote and 383 in the second.

Von der Leyen said in a post on X that she deeply appreciated the support and that her team of commissioners would work closely with the parliament to tackle Europe’s challenges.

The results were slightly better for the EU executive chief than in July, when 360 lawmakers voted against a motion brought by mainly far-right lawmakers, although below the 401 votes for von der Leyen’s re-election for a second term in July 2024.”

I deeply appreciate the strong support received today.

The Commission will keep working closely with the European Parliament to tackle Europe’s challenges. And together deliver results for all European citizens.

United for our people, our values and our future.

“Both censure motions criticized von der Leyen for accepting an unbalanced tariff deal with the United States and proposing a trade agreement with South American bloc Mercosur, which critics say threatens farmers and the environment.

The U.S. and Mercosur deals will be put to votes in the European Parliament in the coming months, with the outcomes unclear.”

Today we tabled a Motion of Censure against von der Leyen and this Commission.

For complicity in genocide, for undemocratic trade deals, for backtracking on climate.

The Parliament voted to defend VDL.

We are not discouraged. Pressure is mounting.
