Zohran Mamdani, favorite for New York mayor, has ties to pro-Hamas networks and allies of Iran, Cuba, and China, analysts warn

Zohran Mamdani, currently the frontrunner for New York mayor, represents a national strategic risk. His record of supporting extremist causes linked to Hamas, his ideological closeness to Iran, Cuba, and China, and his activism in radical networks make his potential election a real threat to national security, social cohesion, and U.S. international influence.

New York is more than a city: it is a hub of global financial, diplomatic, technological, and cultural power. Local candidates with adverse international connections can act as Trojan horses, legitimizing anti-democratic and destabilizing narratives.

Zohran Mamdani is a spokesperson for Hamas.
His platform is not at all dedicated to serving New Yorkers, but entirely focused on demonizing Israel and the Jewish people.

Ignoring the geopolitical implications of actors like Mamdani risks repeating Europe’s mistakes regarding radical Islamism and Chinese and Russian ideological penetration in democratic institutions. National security starts locally.

In a symbolic city like New York, the risk is not just urban—it is geopolitical. Zohran Mamdani, state assemblyman and current frontrunner for mayor, represents more than a progressive candidacy.

His ideological record and international alliances position him as the first viable candidate with traceable links to radical Islamism, Caribbean communism, and adversarial geoeconomic networks targeting the United States.

Strategic Context

Zohran Kwame Mamdani is the son of Marxist intellectuals and a prominent figure in the most radical wing of the New York Democratic Party. On paper, he is a “democratic socialist” legislator.

In practice, his positions have resonated in spaces that glorify dictatorships like Cuba, deny Israel’s right to exist, and justify political violence under the guise of “anti-imperialism.”

In 2023, Mamdani was one of the proponents of the state resolution seeking to halt all exchanges between New York and Israeli institutions, following Hamas attacks on October 7, described by him and his allies as “legitimate acts of resistance.”

This rhetoric is not isolated: it stems from an international network of parties, NGOs, and ideological movements orbiting adversarial regimes like Iran, Cuba, and China.

The Islamo-Communist Connection

Mamdani has been linked to groups such as Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), and Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), whose international policy sections have openly supported theocratic and communist regimes, including Nicolás Maduro, Fidel Castro, Bashar al-Assad, and the Iranian theocracy.

His presence at forums where Hamas and Hezbollah speeches are legitimized is not accidental. According to security analysis by the Middle East Forum, these groups act as bridges between Islamic radicalism and the global authoritarian left. Mamdani not only sympathizes with these actors but articulates their messages in the language of U.S. institutional politics.

Furthermore, his rhetoric has served as a channel for growing Chinese influence in Hispanic America and the Caribbean, particularly through his complicit silence on the Uyghur genocide and Chinese censorship while vehemently denouncing Israel and NATO’s defensive actions. It is a deliberate paradox: attacking liberal democracies while protecting authoritarian dictatorships.

Cuba, Iran, and New York: The Ideological Triangle

The Cuban connection is key. Mamdani has been a guest speaker at events organized by groups affiliated with the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP)—Havana’s soft intelligence arm—and has expressed admiration for the “resilience of the Cuban people against imperialism.”

These narratives are not new, but voiced by a viable candidate for the mayoralty of the United States’ most powerful city, they take on a new dimension of danger.

At the same time, his refusal to condemn Iran’s terrorist activities, his silence on the repression of women in Tehran, and his defense of economic boycott movements against Israel align him with Iran’s strategy of cultural and political infiltration in the West, as documented in multiple U.S. Congressional reports.

Strategic Consequences for the U.S. and Allies

Mamdani’s election would be interpreted by authoritarian regimes as a sign of institutional weakness. At a time when the U.S. is leading a strategic coalition to contain the expansion of the China-Russia-Iran axis in the Western Hemisphere, the rise of a figure who legitimizes these actors from the nation’s economic heart could undermine Washington’s international credibility.

It would also open the door to foreign influence in sensitive urban policies: infrastructure contracts, cooperation with tech companies, cybersecurity, and even decisions regarding the protection of Jewish and Israeli communities in the city.

Prospective Scenarios and Strategic Warnings

If Mamdani comes to power, we could see:

  • Increased institutional tolerance toward pro-Hamas and anti-Israel groups in public and educational spaces.
  • Cooperation agreements with companies and institutions funded by the Chinese Communist Party under the guise of climate or social justice projects.
  • Paralysis of federal urban security initiatives under ideological pretexts.
  • Creation of an anti-American institutional narrative from city government, replicating the Bolivarian mayoral model in Hispanic America.

Public Policy Recommendation

Congress, the FBI, and DHS should actively monitor the international and financial connections of candidates with ideological histories adverse to U.S. strategic interests. The Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) must be enforced without exceptions, including in local campaigns where international actors may exercise influence through front NGOs.

Voters should also be educated about the geopolitical impact of their local decisions. National security begins with the municipal ballot.

What is at stake is not a simple electoral contest. It is an ideological struggle between freedom and the systems that seek its collapse from within. New York cannot afford to become a platform for legitimizing Islamist, communist, and totalitarian agendas.
