Apple lining up successor to CEO Cook – Bloomberg

Senior Vice President John Ternus is reportedly seen as a potential chief as the tech giant prepares for “a broad changing of the guard”

Apple is set to undergo a “broad changing of the guard” as the US tech giant plans for the eventual succession from CEO Tim Cook, Bloomberg has reported.

Cook has guided Apple’s expansion into new product categories since taking over as CEO in 2011, solidifying its position as one of the world’s dominant forces in consumer electronics and digital services.

Apple remains one of the world’s most valuable technology companies, with a market capitalization of nearly $3.4 trillion. It reported $95.4 billion in revenue for its fiscal 2025 second quarter, marking a 5% year-over-year increase.

Several longtime executives have recently departed or announced plans to leave, including Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri and former head of retail Deirdre O’Brien. Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams, once viewed as a leading internal candidate for CEO, is also reportedly planning to retire in the near future.

John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, is reportedly the frontrunner to succeed Tim Cook. He has led Apple’s hardware division since 2021, overseeing the development of the iPhone, Mac, and other flagship products. At 49, Ternus embodies a new generation of leadership and is seen as poised to steer Apple into a more product-driven future, Bloomberg reported. Analysts say the company may now favor a technology-focused chief executive over one rooted in operations or sales.

While Cook has not publicly confirmed his plans, Bloomberg suggested he may remain involved with the company after stepping down. One possibility is that he could serve as chair of the board, helping guide Apple’s long-term strategy while handing day-to-day operations to a new CEO.
