U.K. Green Party Adopts Banning Landlords as Official Policy — Declares Renting Property as ‘Intrinsically Exploitative’

Britain’s Green Party has come up with a revolutionary idea that they believe the voting public is bound to embrace.

At the party’s conference in Bournemouth this weekend, members committed the party to “seek the effective abolition of private landlordism” across the country in addition to other measures that would eventually lead to the abolition of property rights.

The motion states:

The private rental sector has failed, it is a vehicle for wealth extraction, funnelling money from renters to the landlord class.

This motion makes it clear Green Party policy is to seek the effective abolition of private landlordism and our support for building council housing.

The Green Party believes the existence of private landlords adds no positive value to the economy or society, that the relationship between landlord and tenant is inherently and intrinsically extractive and exploitative.

Carla Denyer, the Green Member of Parliament for Bristol Central, insisted that while the motion sound “eye-catching,” it does not actually “abolish landlords.”

“It does, however, address the housing crisis, empowers tenants and improves their wellbeing,” she explained.

”It contains a range of policies which, over time, would reduce the proportion of the housing market that is privately rented, and increase the proportion of socially rented homes.”

“The policies, many of which were contained in our 2024 manifesto, include the introduction of rent controls and giving councils powers to buy properties when landlords sell,” she continued.

“The motion also calls for the mass building of council homes, which was another manifesto commitment, and adds a proposal for a state-owned housing manufacturer to support these efforts and innovate on housing design and manufacture.”

Through a programme of unprecedented council house building, taxation and housing those who need it, a Green government would eliminate profit from a human right.

The party must  now adopt the proposal as its official policy, although the leadership is allowed to change the wording if necessary.

While still a relatively small player in the British political landscape with just four MPs, the Green Party is polling at record highs amid left-wing dissatisfaction with the leadership of Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his Labour Party.

It recently elected 42-year-old Zack Polanski, a self-described “eco-populist,” as its leader.

“The Greens will never dance to the tune of a Trump-loving, tax-avoiding, science-denying, NHS dismantling, corporate stooge.”
