A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck along the Aleutians in Alaska at approximately 12:37 pm local time on Wednesday.
A tsunami warning was issued for Southwest Alaska. Residents were told to head to higher ground.
“The U.S. Tsunami Center said the warning was in effect from about 40 miles (64.4 km) southwest of Homer to Unimak Pass, a distance of about 700 miles. Among the larger communities in the area is Kodiak, population 5,200,” AP reported.
“Officials in the community of King Cove, which has about 870 residents and is on the south side of the Alaska Peninsula, sent an alert calling on those in the coastal area to move to higher ground,” AP said.
There is no danger to Anchorage.
“NO DANGER TO ANCHORAGE! Anchorage, A “Tsunami Warning” may have just hit your cell phones. THIS TSUNAMI WARNING IS NOT FOR THE ANCHORAGE AREA! This message was in response to a large magnitude earthquake southwest of Anchorage, and the message zones overlapped,” a message from the Anchorage Office of Emergency Management said.
