Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (2025).
While the role of Draco Malfoy has yet to be cast in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series, original actor Tom Felton isn’t giving up his wand just yet.
After starring in all eight movies of the beloved blockbuster film series from 2001 to 2011, Felton is now making his Broadway debut in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. His casting marks the first time anyone from the O.G. films has appeared in the stage production.
Felton will play the adult version of Draco at the Lyric Theatre in New York City, beginning Nov. 11 for a 19-week run through March 22, 2026.
“Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” he said in a statement. “Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play.”
The news was first announced on Today on Thursday, June 5, where the actor told Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin that his casting is “very much a pinch-me” situation. “I keep thinking I’m dreaming. I let go of that character 16 years ago, and now I get to step back into his shoes, as a father this time, in a new story.”
Over on Instagram, Felton and the official Harry Potter and the Cursed Child accounts shared a first look at Felton in his black robes and sleek blonde hairstyle, resembling his on-screen father, Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs).
Felton admitted he “cried” when he tried on the character’s platinum wig again after so long, considering how deeply the franchise shaped his childhood. “It’s very, very easy to get emotional,” the 37-year-old told Today.com. “When they put my blond wig on for the theater production, I just immediately cried. It was just sort of like a blast from the past. … It was something that I never thought I’d see again.”

What Is Harry Potter And The Cursed Child About?

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play written by Jack Thorne, based on a story by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany, and Thorne. The plot takes place 19 years after the events of J.K. Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Harry is now an adult, married to Ginny Weasley, and serves as the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic. He has three children, including Albus, who is beginning his journey at Hogwarts. After being sorted into Slytherin, Albus struggles with the weight of his family legacy. The play debuted in London’s West End in the summer of 2016.
“The play is such an independent story from the ‘Potter’ films that I grew up with. We start 19 years later … now we’re no longer children,” Felton explained to Today about his character has evolved in Cursed Child. “We actually are the parents. So as much as it is reprising an old role for me, it’s very much treading into new, unfamiliar territory. I know him quite well as a kid. I don’t know him that well as an adult. So that’s the that’s the exciting challenge ahead for me.”
Chris Columbus, the director behind the first two Harry Potter films, told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021 that he would be open to directing an adaptation of the stage sequel featuring the original main cast – Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson – as their adult counterparts.
“A version of Cursed Child with Dan, Rupert and Emma at the right age, it’s cinematic bliss. If you’re a film nerd or cinephile, it’s kind of like what J.J. Abrams did with Star Wars… There’s no question if you’re a Star Wars fan, you were moved just seeing them on screen, seeing Harrison Ford as Han Solo again — and Chewy,” he said.
“I think that would be the same situation for Harry Potter fans. To able to actually see these adult actors now back in these roles? Oh, yeah. It would be amazingly fun to make that film — or two films,” Columbus added.
The news of Felton’s return comes shortly after HBO revealed the cast for the iconic Harry Potter trio in its upcoming TV adaptation. Rising stars Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton will portray Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, respectively. The series, planned to run for 10 years, is slated to premiere in 2026.
