Menendez Brothers Have Murder Sentences Downgraded After 35 Years — Becoming Instantly Eligible For Parole

Erik and Lyle Menendez

Erik and Lyle Menendez, convicted of killing their parents in 1989, have been given a new chance at freedom after more than three decades behind bars.

On Tuesday, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic reduced their sentences from life without parole to 50 years to life, making them immediately eligible to apply for release.

The decision came after years of legal efforts and emotional pleas from family members who have long supported their release.

During the resentencing hearing, both brothers addressed the court via video, expressing remorse for their crimes.

“On Aug. 20, 1989, I killed my mom and dad. I make no excuses and also no justification,” said Lyle Menendez, holding back tears.

“The impact of my violent actions on my family … is unfathomable.”

Jesic ruled immediately after hearing their statements, shortening what was expected to be a two-day hearing.

“I’m not saying they should be released; it’s not for me to decide,” he said.

“I do believe they’ve done enough in the past 35 years, that they should get that chance.”

The ruling followed months of opposition from prosecutors, who argued the brothers had not fully accepted responsibility for their actions.

However, they ultimately chose not to present further witnesses, stating they had already submitted all relevant evidence.

The defense, meanwhile, presented character witnesses, including family members, to highlight their rehabilitation.

The judge said he was particularly influenced by a letter from a prison official supporting resentencing, something the official had never done before in 25 years.

Erik Menendez also addressed his family during the hearing.

“You did not deserve what I did to you, but you inspire me to do better,” he said.

The brothers were convicted in 1996 of murdering their father, Jose Menendez, a music executive, and their mother, Kitty, in their Beverly Hills home. They were 18 and 21 at the time.

While the defense cited years of sexual abuse, prosecutors maintained the killings were financially motivated.

Their next step is a parole hearing scheduled for June 13, which includes a risk assessment ordered by California Governor Gavin Newsom as part of a clemency review.
