One week after a deadly Russian missile strike killed 19 people, including nine children and teenagers, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the site of the attack in his hometown of Kryvyi Rih.
“An ordinary district. All around, there are only residential buildings, only civilian structures,” the president said, according to a statement.
The world must not forget that human lives mean nothing to Russia,” he said.
A published video shows the president laying a stuffed teddy bear on a playground and placing flowers at makeshift memorials near a school.
Among the victims were nine children and teenagers aged between three and 17. The attack wounded 75 Ukrainians, including 17 children and damaged 60 apartment blocks, 23 private homes and three educational institutions.
During a subsequent meeting with military officials and the regional administration, Zelensky said the discussions primarily focused on strengthening air defences in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
“Since the beginning of the year alone, there have been more than 2,000 air strikes,” the president wrote. That is almost twice as many as in the same period last year.
Zelensky also visited a local military hospital, where he presented medals to soldiers. Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for more than three years.
