The Cannes Film Festival unveiled its lineup for the 78th edition, which will be held from May 13 to 24. During the press conference presented by the festival’s artistic director Thierry Frémaux and the president of the festival, Iris Knobloch, some established directors such as Richard Linklater and Ari Aster have been announced, among many upcoming and promising filmmakers including actors Scarlett Johansson, Harris Dickinson for their respective directorial debuts, but also Fatih Akin, Kelly Reichardt and Chie Hayakawa.

This year, the president of the jury will be French actress Juliette Binoche, who will be succeeding American director Greta Gerwig who presided over the prestigious jury in 2024. During the conference, Knobloch stressed the importance of having two women as president of the jury for two consecutive years. On Binoche, she said, “She is one of the few French actresses to have received an Oscar,” She added: “She embodies a permanent reinvention.”

In a press release, Binoche said, “I’m looking forward to sharing these life experiences with the members of the Jury and the public. In 1985, I walked up the steps for the first time with the enthusiasm and uncertainty of a young actress; I never imagined I’d return 40 years later in the honorary role of President of the Jury. I appreciate the privilege, the responsibility and the absolute need for humility.”

It was announced a few days ago that Tom Cruise would be returning to the Croisette May 14 for the premiere of Mission: Impossible —The Final Reckoning. Another impressive cast will also be walking the red carpet this year, as Wes Anderson, a regular of the Cannes Film Festival, will also be presenting in competition, his newest film The Phoenician Scheme, starring Benicio Del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Tom Hanks, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Jeffrey Wright and Brian Cranston.

A few minutes ago, Spike Lee himself took to Instagram to share that his highly anticipated Highest 2 Lowest starring Denzel Washington was also going to premiere out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, after initially not being announced during the press conference this morning.

During the conference, Frémaux said that he had just received a few messages because he had forgotten to announce a movie. The artistic director added that it was maybe on purpose since some movies still had to be confirmed in the coming days, so we might wonder if he was referring to Spike Lee’s.

As always, many of these movies could set the tone for the rest of the year, but also for the next awards season. Indeed, at this year’s Oscars, many of the nominated and awarded films had previously premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, including the Palme d’Or winner Anora, Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, or yet again The Apprentice and Flow.

Frémaux announced that 2209 films were viewed this year ahead of the offical selection, which he noted to be an absolute record. As always, some categories will be updated in the next few days as the festival keeps announcing new titles in some of these categories, including the Special Screenings.
