NBA TV host Sam Mitchell got into an intense, one-sided verbal altercation with co-host Chris Miles after a comment about money rubbed him the wrong way.
Last night (Oct. 11), Mitchell and Miles were having a discussion about Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Steve Kerr. A picture of Curry’s gold medal from the Paris Olympics caused Mitchell to casually note that coaches don’t receive them too.
“The coaches don’t get medals, he said. “I guess it just tells you what international — how they value coaches. Not at all.”
Miles, sensing the energy turn, attempted to keep the mood light with a joke. “I’m surprised coaches get a paycheck for this show,” remarked Miles. “I think like, maybe you should do this pro bono, my friend.”
“You know, last time I looked at my check, it’s pretty close,” responded Mitchell, who coached the Raptors from 2004 to 2008 and was also an interim coach for the Timberwolves from 2015 to 2016. “So hey, I’m taking donations.”
This further prompted Mitchell to go on the offense. “Why don’t you come up off some of that money you got? Since you’re over there bragging about it,” he added.
Miles laughed off the comment, explaining that he wasn’t bragging about anything — but Mitchell was fired up by then.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Mitchell said. “Did you rent your beach house out, down in Florida, during the hurricane? Or do I need to go on. How about your townhouse?
“You wanna call me out,” he continued. “I mean, come on. You screaming broke and hungry. Let’s just see it. You know, I know what you have and where you live, young fella. So you need to stop.”
Awkward moment. In the midst of Mitchell’s fiery statements, Miles attempted to bring the conversation back to a more level ground. “I think we have snitches on the show today. His name is Sam Mitchell,” he joked.
“No, we don’t have snitches,” Mitchell retorted. “We have truth-tellers. You’re the one who’s crying poor and destitute up here — do I need to keep going, or do you want me to stop right now?”
At this point, Miles tried to bring the focus back to the game that they were covering — but Mitchell wouldn’t comply.
“I done told you, young fella, you gotta stop messing with me on national TV,” Mitchell said. “I done told you about that. Hey, do I need to give out the address? ‘Cause you’re not at home right now.”
Though things seemingly cooled down after that, Mitchell did end up revealing Miles’ address in Destin, FL.
Lesson learned: don’t mess with Mitchell.
