Greenland’s Prime Minister has lashed out at plans by Second Lady Usha Vance to visit the territory.
Speaking with local media, Prime Minister Mute Egede said the “only purpose of the visit was a demonstration of power” by Washington.
“We are now at a level where it can in no way be characterized as a harmless visit from a politician’s wife,” he said.
He also criticized plans by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz to visit the territory.
“What is the national security adviser doing in Greenland?” he asked.
“The only purpose is to demonstrate power over us.”
“His mere presence in Greenland will no doubt fuel American belief in Trump’s mission — and the pressure will increase.”
Egede added that his efforts to be diplomatic simply “bounces off Donald Trump and his administration in their mission to own and control Greenland.”
President Trump has made no secret of his desire to take control of Greenland, but only if the local population want to do so.
“We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America,” Trump said during his recent joint address to Congress.
“We will keep you safe. We will make you rich. And together we will take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before.”
In a statement announcing her visit, the White House said that the Second Lady will participate in local activities:
On Thursday, March 27, 2025, Second Lady Usha Vance will travel to Greenland with her son and a United States delegation to visit historical sites, learn about Greenlandic heritage, and attend the Avannaata Qimussersu, Greenland’s national dogsled race.
The race brings together approximately 37 mushers and 444 dogs in a remarkable display of speed, skill, and teamwork. Ms. Vance and the delegation are excited to witness this monumental race and celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Waltz said the visit was merely about exploring the country and its culture.
“We also look forward to experiencing Greenland’s famous hospitality and are confident that this visit presents an opportunity to build on partnerships that respects Greenland’s self-determination and advances economic cooperation.”
